Overview

The event.

The Sydney Marathon joined the Abbott World Marathon Majors in 2025, taking its place alongside Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, New York and Tokyo. The course starts at North Sydney, crosses the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the opening kilometres, and winds through Pyrmont, Centennial Park and the eastern harbour before a finish at the Sydney Opera House. It is one of the most scenically dramatic marathons on the circuit — but also one of the more testing majors, with rolling hills through the middle 20km.

Enormous international field, live cheer bands, and the surreal experience of crossing a closed Harbour Bridge with 30,000 other runners at sunrise. The finish beneath the Opera House sails is the pay-off.

Who it suitsExperienced marathoners chasing a Six Star medal, and runners who want a scenic, spectator-lined big-city marathon.

How to Train

Preparing your body.

Recommended preparation

16–20 weeks with a hill-strength emphasis in weeks 4 to 12.

Long sessions

Long runs of 32–35km including 500–700m of climbing to mimic the middle of the Sydney course.

Strength training

Weekly single-leg strength — split squats, step-ups, calf raises.

Recovery

Prioritise sleep and midweek easy running; the hills add load quickly.

Course-specific prep

Practise downhill running form so you can descend from Kings Cross efficiently.

Nutrition practice

Test caffeinated gels for the second half — the hills bite around 25–30km.

Key weekly sessions

  • Long run with rolling terrain
